Wild Lettuce

Lactuca canadensis

May, June, July, August

Spring, Summer

Wild lettuce is another important summer food for black bears but less preferred than berries and hazelnuts. Wild lettuce can sustain bears in years when berries and hazelnuts are scarce. It is biennial and can grow up to 8 feet tall. Wild lettuce can be found in a variety of conditions, from shady, moist woods to dry, gravelly roadsides.
